37-40

So, I’m waaay behind on my posts…time for some filling in. Here’s the start, dating back to summertime. Word is, I still think I’ll make it!

37. Hyperion – Dan Simmons

Holy crap. This is the best sci-fi I’ve read in years, probably since the Otherland stuff by Tad Williams. Basically, imagine the Canterbury Tales retold only with the questors in search of the devil, who shall doom them to eternal suffering. In space (of course). The literary muscle at play here blows my freaking mind – as does the sci-fi cred.

38. Fall of Hyperion – Dan Simmons

We follow our folks through the Hyperion world on their way to a rendevous with the devil (the Shrike) who may also be a saviour – naturally, this is a tale of the apocalypse. Get it. Read it. ‘Nuff said.

39. Endymion – Dan Simmons

So, instead of focusing on my fricking minor field list while traveling India this summer, I got sidetracked by Simmons’ novels…this one kicks off the next duology with a new narrative stream and what appears to be the saviour/rebirth premise founded in the Hyperion novels. The book is as good as the first pair and, though the narrator Raul (prounounced Saul) Endymion’s persona’s a bit annoying, the premise of the book’s so good I lost track of him.

40. Rise of Endymion – Dan Simmons

The endgame for the series…an impossible feat, given how thorough the build has been…I’m not going to play spoiler for those who’ve not read the series (I see you, Neil) but I gotta say that the ending leaves me happy that I didn’t waste my time avoiding the work I should have been doing rather than reading these books.
