21. Andre Kertesz, The Early Years
Friends gave me this book for my birthday. I’d never heard of Andre Kertesz before, but now will have to do more research on him.
Kertesz, 1894-1985, was a Hungarian-born photographer who was known for his groundbreaking contributions to photographic composition and by his efforts in establishing and developing the photo essay. (Wikipedia). The arresting images in this beautiful book come from a 13 year period in Hungary when Kertesz was developing his vision. The composition is striking and brilliant, and his use of himself as subject and of nudes in his ‘naturalist’ shots prefigure the modernist era. Lovely and intriguing. -Nikki
